Ended Wednesday and welcomed Thursday after a swim with Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus a 1962 album by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi (credited to the Vince Guaraldi Trio). Initially intended as a jazz response to the 1959 film Black Orpheus, the album is best known for including the original composition "Cast Your Fate to the Wind", which became a surprise commercial hit and won Guaraldi a Grammy Award for Best Original Jazz Composition.

Contemporary reviews were favorable. A 1962 Billboard feature noted that Guaraldi and his trio presented the Black Orpheus themes with "sensitivity and style," and singled out "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" for its distinctiveness.

Cashbox also praised the trio's interpretation of the film score, describing the music as having "exceptional merit" and noting the trio's rhythmic vitality. - Wikipedia

Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus is the third album by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi (credited to the Vince Guaraldi Trio), released in 1962 on Fantasy Records. It is considered Guaraldi's breakthrough album.

Billboard sensed the genre crossover appeal of "Cast Your Fate to the Wind": "The alternately bright and brooding moods of the music from the film Black Orpheus are detailed with sensitivity and style by pianist Guaraldi and his rhythm section. This jazz version is a superior outing for the group and its vastly underrated leader. The four tunes from the score fill out one side of the LP, while standards and originals take up the other. Of these, the Calypso-tinged 'Cast Your Fate to the Wind' is a wonderful track indeed." - Wikipedia

Black Orpheus (Portuguese: Orfeu Negro [ɔɾˈfew ˈneɣɾu]) is a 1959 romantic tragedy film directed by French filmmaker Marcel Camus and starring Marpessa Dawn and Breno Mello. It is based on the play Orfeu da Conceição by Vinicius de Moraes, which set the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice in a contemporary favela in Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval. The film was an international co-production among companies in Brazil, France and Italy.

The film is particularly noted for its soundtrack by two Brazilian composers: Antônio Carlos Jobim, whose song "A felicidade" opens the film, and Luiz Bonfá, whose "Manhã de Carnaval" and "Samba de Orfeu" have become classics of bossa nova. The songs performed by Orfeu were dubbed by singer Agostinho dos Santos - Wikipedia

Black Orpheus from 1959 is tonight's film.

It played a huge role in sparking the bossa nova craze, which swept the USA in the early '60s.

Slowly but surely. I find that KANOPY, the big library site, has a number of great older films and classics. I look there when I have exhausted all avenues for forgotten favourites. I have just put #BlackOrpheus on my watchlist there and also Fritz Lang's M with #PeterLorre

The Spirit and Magic of “Black Orpheus”

A mesmerising cinematic journey that plunges you into the vibrant world of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival. This beautiful piece of cinema reimagines the Ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice agains…

Until a few months ago I didn't know that #HBO/ #Max has an excellent library of #classic and #ArtHouse #films.

Titles like: #Vampyr, #81/2, #BattleshipPotemkin, #M, #ThePassionOfJoanOfArc, #PantherPanchali, #MyNeighborTotoro, #BlackOrpheus, #Stalker, #WarAndPiece (all 4 volumes), #Ugetsu, #Z, #BlackGirl and a LOT more.

It's a catalog worthy of the #CriterionChannel, if you need to save money.

When I gush about #MCU and other #pop #movies, I'm using my spotty knowledge of a century of #movies
