An echo parakeet chick during a health check.
Throwback during my time as a hand-rearer/conservationist for the echo parakeet project in Mauritius.

What humanity has harmed, humanity can restore.
Imagine the wonders we can create by focusing on restoration rather than destruction.

▪️Once called the rarest bird on the planet, the echo parakeet had a wild population of just 10-12 individuals in 1986.
It is the sole survivor of the six known endemic parrot species from the Mascarene Islands.

▪️Conservation efforts including captive breeding, safeguarding nests from predators, providing artificial nest boxes, supplementing wild bird diets and restoring their habitat, have helped elevate the population to 540 birds by 2011.
Efforts are still being made to secure the survival of this bird on Mauritius.

Grateful to be have been a part of this special project. 💚

Wow. My first post on here!
I'm excited to find more wildlife lovers and photographers on here. 😁

One of the pink pigeons (Nesoenas mayeri) around Ebony Forest Chamarel.

In 1991 only 10 individuals remained in the wild, thanks to an intensive species recovery programme, the population increased. It's the only Mascarenes pigeon species that has escaped extinction.

Intensive management is still needed for their survival.
Supplementary feeding, the installing of nest boxes and the control of introduced predators such as rats are a few of the undertaken measures.
