METS is a container format. Is the METS just containing the MARC XML or is there more going on?

If you speak linked data, there is BIBFRAME and you can round trip MARC XML to BIBFRAME.

The links in the linked data almost exclusively point to vocabs on https://id.loc.gov/

Datasets available include LCSH, BIBFRAME, LC Name Authorities, LC Classification, MARC codes, PREMIS vocabularies, ISO language codes, and more.
