Hey so has #Ubuntu completely #b0rked some new #Networking / #WiFi #Snap or what?

I've been getting persistent popups every 300 seconds all morning

"System x minutes ago:

Sign in to WiFi network

Wired Connection 1"

OK: so my wired network through my Netgear Orbi has been set for a good ten years; my WiFi networking via the Orbi ditto

The whole thing looks as sus as all hell

When I dismiss the noti it opens a Firefox tab that tries to access a broken, sus URL:

connectivity-check.ubuntu.com.

NOTE 0: the box this is all happening on is on a wired LAN, period. No WiFi at all, period

NOTE 1: URL ends with a dot, not a slash

NOTE 2: URL is http, not https

It finally times-out with a 503 Service Unavailable

The URL itself does check out via whois and host

"organisation: ORG-CGL14-RIPE
org-name: Canonical Group Limited
country: GB"

Did Ubuntu get started with a new WiFi networking snap, not get it finished, and go home for the weekend or what?

that ambivalent feeling when you fixed something for its main task (yay!) by making it less capable overall (fuck!) albeit in a way you don't really use (yay!) but have done and could again (fuck!) because despite knowing exactly what's wrong (yay!) you are _never_ finding the part (fuck!)

which is why my 1st gen anker soundcore now has a barrel jack and is 100% externally powered.

tho' I suppose I could rig up a battery pack and make it mobile again. fugly, but mobile.
