"#OnThisDay Pan American World Airways acquired American Overseas Airlines (A.O.A.) from American Airlines in 1950. American Overseas Airlines started as American Export Airlines in 1937, and was purchased by American Airlines in 1945. A.O.A. was awarded routes to England, Iceland, Ireland, and other destinations in Europe. Once acquired, PAA obtained all of A.O.A. routes and assets including eight Boeing 377 Stratocruisers, seven Constellations, three DC-4s, and one DC-3. "In the early 1960s, United Air Lines brought new jet airliners into service providing unprecedented speed, comfort, and efficiency. With the Douglas DC-8 and the Boeing 720, coast-to-coast travel time was less than six hours. The interiors of the new jets were far more spacious and quiet than any of the propeller-driven airliners. With more interior space, greater attention was paid to inflight amenities such as elaborate, multi-course meal service, inflight movies, and individualized air conditioning controls. Have you ever flown on a DC-8? "The Lockheed Model 12 Electra was similar to the Model 10 Electra in design, but smaller and faster. Most airlines rejected the aircraft, primarily because of its low capacity of only six passengers. The few exceptions were Continental Air Lines, which operated a fleet of three Model 12 types, and British West Indian Airways. However, the aircraft was successful as a fast company and government transport, and as a military transport and bomber trainer. "Developed behind the Iron Curtain by the Tupolev Design Bureau during the late 1950s, the massive Tu-114 Rossiya (Russia) turboprop airliner was introduced by the Soviet national airline Aeroflot in 1961. With a range of nearly 4,000 miles and a capacity of up to 220 passengers, the Tu-114 was an ideal aircraft for Aeroflot's long-distance domestic routes throughout the vast territories of the U.S.S.R, as well as international flights to Europe and transatlantic flights to North America and Cuba. In 1967, Tu-114 service was initiated to Japan under an agreement with Japan Air Lines in which the two airlines shared flight crew duties. Aeroflot operated the Tu-114 until the 1970s.
