This little fellow is Athyrium.
He's not much to look at right now, but a week ago he was nothing more than a little root, and I was going to give up on him, thinking that he had just not made it through the winter.
He will soon be a proud mass of silver grey fronds, with ruddy veins.
He is a #Fern.
I shall plant him in the garden.

Athyrium filix-femina 'Lady in Red' fern emerging in the front garden. You can see how small the fronds still are by comparing them to the dried oak leaf, the blades of grass, and the plant label nearby.

Of course, I love all ferns equally, but if I did have favourites, Athyrium niponicum var. pictum would be top 5. Absolutely gorgeous and easy to grow. #Ferns #Athyrium

Eared Lady-fern (Athyrium otophorum var. okanum) is really excellent at this time of year. Beautiful and - once established - quite drought-tolerant too.

#Ferns #FernFriday (I know it’s not Friday but maybe it will be when you see this) #Athyrium

Athyrium otophorum okanum - frozen solid. Very pretty in the frost, but I cannot wait for this cold spell to end in the UK 🥶
