Oh, I will have to read those James and Conrad pastiches by Max Beerbohm. Thank you for your review (subtle and insightful, as ever). I'll order the book from Topping & Company.

The Arnold Bennett piece will be a special bonus. I spent a large part of my younger life in the Stoke area; memories.

May we all have the mildly deluded self-confidence of #ArnoldBennett yelling at the Dolomites.
#AldousHuxley on #ArnoldBennett: "There he went, toddling slowly in the bright Alpine sunshine, his thumbs in the armholes of a yellow waistcoat which bulged, a little lower down, with the graceful curve of a Regency bow window at Brighton - his head thrown back as though to aim some stammered utterance, howitzer-like, at the blue dome of heaven. What he actually said, I have forgotten; but what his whole manner, air and posture fairly shouted was, "I'm as good as those damned mountains."
One of my all time fave #NonFiction books is #TheIntellectualsAndTheMasses by #JohnCarey (which I read in uni but haven't actually looked at since). As I was reading the #AldousHuxley classic #TheDoorsOfPerception, Huxley mentions his exuberant friend, the writer #ArnoldBennett, & I knew I'd heard that name before. On a hunch, I opened up a digital copy of my John Carey, and there it is... the first line of Ch 8: "Arnold Bennett is the hero of this book." The scream I scrumpt!! #WorkJournal
