The Numbers Are Bad, and the Denial Is Worse

BAYBAY CITY, Leyte, June 27, 2026 — The president’s polling problem is no longer a bump in the road. It is becoming the road.

Donald Trump is sitting in dangerous political territory. Public polling has him in the mid-to-high 30s nationally, with disapproval running much higher. Reuters/Ipsos has him at 34 percent approval. AP-NORC has him around 37 percent. That is not a presidency gliding toward the midterms. That is a presidency dragging an anchor.

The danger for Republicans is not only that Trump is unpopular. They have lived with that before. The deeper danger is that the reasons for his weakness are spreading across several fronts at once.

On the economy, voters are sour. On Iran, voters are unconvinced. On immigration, even one of Trump’s strongest political issues has softened. The president’s base may still cheer the performance, but elections are not won by applause inside the tent. They are won by persuading people outside it to come in.

That is where the problem gets ugly.

The Iran conflict appears to have damaged Trump in exactly the place he could least afford it: among voters who supported him because they believed he would avoid foreign wars and lower costs at home. Instead, voters saw military conflict, uncertainty, higher prices, and then a deal many Americans do not trust. When only about one in four Americans say the war was worth the cost, that is not a foreign policy victory. That is a warning flare.

Republicans also face a grim generic congressional ballot. Democrats are leading by roughly six points in major polling averages. That does not automatically mean a blue wave. District lines matter. Candidate quality matters. Turnout matters. Money matters. But a six-point Democratic edge, paired with a president stuck in the 30s, is exactly the kind of weather report that makes campaign managers start checking the storm cellar.

The public numbers are bad enough. The internal numbers are probably worse, or at least frightening enough that Republicans are already adjusting their behavior. Candidates do not usually run away from a popular president. They run away from a president who might turn their race into a referendum on him.

And that is the central problem for Trump. He has always been larger than his party. When his numbers are strong, that helps Republicans. When his numbers collapse, it pulls the whole party toward the hole.

Trump can claim better numbers. He can point to friendly polls. He can insist the public loves what he is doing. But the broader picture is plain: most Americans disapprove of his performance, many doubt his judgment, and the midterm environment is turning hostile.

This is not the end of the story. Four months is a long time in politics. Democrats can still find a way to blow it, because Democrats have a historic gift for stepping on rakes.

But right now, the president is weak, the public is restless, and Republicans know it.

That is the situation.

Not spin.

Not wishcasting.

The numbers are bad.

Fox News Highlights Multiple Polls Showing Declining Approval Ratings for Trump

A recent Fox News segment focused on President Donald Trump’s declining approval ratings and the Republican Party’s continued loyalty to him despite negative polling trends. During the broadcast, Fox News anchor Gillian Turner questioned Republican National Committee chair Joe Gruters about several new polls showing Trump’s approval numbers falling significantly. According to a Fox News poll conducted between May 15 and May 18 among 1,002 registered voters, Trump received a 39% approval rating while 61% disapproved of his performance, marking the highest disapproval figure recorded by the network during his presidency. Additional surveys cited during the discussion included an AP-NORC poll showing 37% approval and 62% disapproval, as well as a Wall Street Journal poll with 41% approval and 57% disapproval. Turner noted that it was striking that Trump still maintained strong support within the Republican Party despite these numbers. Joe Gruters defended Trump’s influence over Republicans, arguing that the party base remains strongly supportive of him and emphasizing Trump’s effectiveness in endorsing candidates during elections. Gruters also dismissed concerns over Trump’s endorsement of former Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate primary instead of Senator John Cornyn. Even longtime Fox commentator Brit Hume expressed concern that Cornyn might be a safer candidate for Republicans in the general election. The Wall Street Journal poll also indicated that Democrats currently hold an 8-point advantage on the generic congressional ballot. Additionally, the survey suggested that strong approval among Republican voters has weakened compared to earlier in the year. The article portrays growing concerns within conservative media circles about Trump’s broader political standing ahead of upcoming elections.

Trump Shares Outdated Front Page Amid Declining Approval Ratings

President Donald Trump posted a three-month-old New York Post front page to Truth Social, praising himself for his 'winning' economic message in a February State of the Union address. The post, captioned 'Have it!!! Great. President DJT,' highlights Trump's apparent detachment from current events as his administration faces growing challenges. Since that speech, Trump's approval rating has declined significantly, with a New York Times/Siena poll placing it at 37 percent, and Nate Silver's average showing disapproval at 58.6 percent — the worst since George W. Bush left office. The State of the Union preceded a conflict with Iran that has resulted in 13 U.S. deaths and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, fueling a global energy crisis and higher gas prices. Additionally, Trump's handling of the economy is receiving historically low approval, with only 33 percent of Americans approving as of a recent Quinnipiac poll. Analysts have also noted the president's frequent late-night posts and instances of apparent fatigue during official duties, raising concerns about his focus and engagement. The post underscores a disconnect between Trump's self-promotion and the current political and economic realities facing his administration.

Trump's Approval Rating Hits Near Record Lows in Latest Fox News Poll

A recent Fox News poll has revealed a significant drop in President Donald Trump's approval ratings, alarming both the public and media commentators. On MSNBC's 'Morning Joe,' co-host Mika Brzezinski highlighted the figures, noting that Trump's overall job performance stands at just 39 percent. This represents a three-point decrease from last month and a ten-point drop since the beginning of his second term. Only one point separates this rating from his lowest ever, recorded in October 2017 during his first term. Meanwhile, his disapproval rate has reached a record high of 61 percent. Voter dissatisfaction is especially pronounced regarding the economy, with 71 percent expressing disapproval of Trump's economic handling, marking a five-point increase from last month and a 15-point rise compared to a year ago. Interestingly, this includes a notable seven-point jump in disapproval among Republican voters. On foreign policy, two-thirds of respondents believe the United States is winning the war with Iran, yet 60 percent oppose the military action, reflecting growing public concern and complexity in messaging for the administration. These numbers indicate a challenging political environment for Trump as he faces both domestic and international scrutiny.
