Starting my day with a fresh dose of anger and resentment over #reddit selling out one year ago, attacking its community, degrading its value as a platform, and destroying the trust of its users. All to cash in on the AI bubble and monetize the free labor of its users.
I quit reddit last year when #ApolloApp shut down. I was a regular user and contributor for over ten years by then. Reddit was my primary source of news, discussion, and entertainment. I met people on reddit who had a direct, profound impact on me irl. Most importantly, I believe reddit's left-leaning communities saved me from falling into the alt-right pipeline as a younger man. It meant a lot to me over the years.
And they just... tore it all down to make a quick buck.
Ugh. At least y'all on Mastodon are great. That's the one silver lining to this, that I found my way here after leaving reddit. Thanks for being great.
Remember the #Reddit Blackout of 2023? Reddark was a site that kept track of the status of subreddits, and it was honestly exciting to check in its heyday.
The last update before it stopped displaying info was mid-January 2024. Nearly all subs have gone back to their original status.

I miss #ApolloApp, stopped reading Reddit for a bit, but then begrudgingly switched to the official app. Over time, I got used to it, ads and all.
...
I'm part of the problem, aren't I?
A fantastic app that is still alive with some tweaks!

Thank you @christianselig for a fantastic app even though the app is locked in time.

Lemmy's app Voyager is great! It's so much like Apollo. Not as polished, but it works well. Will be donating.
@ellane And how will you ever know if any company is a long term player in the cloud storage space? Answer: you can’t. The only sure thing is that you dropped cold hard cash on some online thing based on history, not a crystal ball. Which is the reason I didn’t drop $120 on Koofr despite the mostly good reviews. Tomorrow they could get bought out and cease operations.
I’m sure everyone that paid money for #ApolloApp can relate.
When I pay, I want a thing. And I don’t want to “rent” it either.
