The goal of most "radical" educators seems to be to create new radicals, to shape the raw material that is children into a completed adult product which is a revolutionary. While the goals are different, this is otherwise indistinguishable from conventional education, where children are seen as unformed and in need of shaping, instead, into productive citizens.

In none of this is a child seen as a full person, right now, who has worth merely by being a person now, and who is deserving of freedom from the crushing violence of patriarchal adult supremacy.

No education is radical if it is concerned primarily with producing a specific kind of person, rather than dismantling adult supremacy and moving towards youth liberation.

Essay #59: DaN Mckee, ‘Anarchist: Subverting the System from Within’

In this essay, adapted from his recently published book, Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher, DaN McKee reflects on his personal experiences with the inner conflict of being an anarchist teacher working within a school-system built on discipline and control.  He looks back on his misguided attempts to subvert such systems through strict adherence to their absurd rules, and the more successful moments of subversion that came when he restored humanity and horizontalism to his classroom. DaN McKee received his PhD from Cardiff University in 2009 and is currently Head of Theology and Philosophy at a secondary school in the West Midlands.  Alongside Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher: A Memoir of Struggle, Grief, Philosophy and Hope (out now on Earth Island), his recent publications include Authentic Democracy: An Ethical Justification of Anarchism  and ‘Character Flaws – An Anarchist Critique of Character Education in England’s Secondary Schools’ in Anarchist Studies. His forthcoming paper, ‘An Error of Punishment Defences in the Context of Schooling’ will be published in the Journal of Philosophy of Education soon. DaN also produces music under the name of Strangely Shaped By Fathers and runs the websites www.philosophyunleashed.com and www.everythingdanmckee.com  Our music comes from Them'uns (featuring Yous'uns). [This is part of a thread, read associated msgs] A good way to help this along is mentioning people here that are teachers and anarchists! This way the right people gets to see the post. At the stage I'm at I am just searching for discussion and idea generation. #anarchisteducation #anarchoteacher #anarchism #education

Since before 2015 i have had this dream of starting a type of anarchist academy in stockholm. A school. A learner hub. A permanent place where people can find anarchism for the first time, or engage in deeper level analysis. A place where radical and anti-authoritarian pedagogy is explored and nurtured.

Over the last 6 months these ideas have once again become increasingly intrusive and I believe that this might actually be something I want to spend time and energy doing.

The first and foremost problem is that of finding those who want to be part of the pedagogic crew, the ones who would be the "teachers" but not in the traditional sense, rather the ones who can help participants create courses, lectures and structure learning. The second question is all about how other peoples projects along similar lines have gone, and what the main taleaways from those projects could be.

So, I guess this is a first attempt at asking for help. Are u an anarchist teacher? How would you do this? What are the things you see as possible downfalls? Have you already done this, and in that case where do I find your stuff?

Nice to see my work cited in the new issue of Anarchist Studies journal, included in a group of writings one paper calls “the most relevant works published this century”which “represent ‘the new wave’ of anarchism in education”. 👌 I needed that this week - it’s been a tough one.

(Annoying it’s behind a paywall though!)

My own Anarchist Studies paper on education is free though - here: https://journals.lwbooks.co.uk/anarchiststudies/vol-29-issue-2/article-9445/
