The America That Ended at the Mississippi

If a modern American looks at a map, the Mississippi River appears near the middle of the country. It is a major river, but not a frontier. Beyond it lie Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, California, Oregon, Washington, and dozens of familiar places. The river divides regions, not worlds. For Americans around 1800, the Mississippi looked very different. It was not the center of the nation. It was the edge of it. A Nation Facing the Ocean The United States was born on the Atlantic coast. Its largest […]

Getting some motivation tonight by watching my favorite American Revolution documentary while working on 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲.

There is nothing quite like revisiting the history, personalities, and battles of the Revolution while building a strategy game devoted to bringing that era to life.

Back to work, and back to the fight for independence.

The Deal That Built Washington

Most capitals are built because someone chooses them.A king selects a city.A parliament votes.A government issues a decree. Washington was different The future capital of the United States was not chosen because it was the largest city, the richest port, or the most important center of trade. In 1790, it was little more than a stretch of land along the Potomac River. Its greatest advantage was political. The city existed because the young republic needed a compromise. A Country Divided by […]

St. Andrew’s Cemetery & Battle of Iron Works Hill

Located in Mount Holly New Jersey, this site was where the Battle of Iron Works Hill took place in December 1776 . Since moving to the Mount Holly area, we have explored a number of historic sites. If you have watched our YouTube channel then you have seen a number of our meanders. We have checked out Burlington County's trolls such as Big Rusty in Hainesport, and Woody in the Rancocas Woods. Another local exploration was of "The Mount," which highlighted not only Revolutionary War […]

The Capital That Did Not Exist

How can a nation have a government but no capital?Today, every nation seems to have an obvious center.France has Paris.Britain has London.Russia has Moscow.Even people who know little about these countries can usually identify their capitals immediately. The United States appears no different. Washington, D.C. is one of the most recognizable cities in the world. The White House, the Capitol, the National Mall, and the monuments along the Potomac River have become symbols not only of the […]

The States Before the Nation

What Was America in 1801?To modern readers the answer seems obvious.America was a nation. It had a president, a Constitution, a Congress, a capital city, and a growing sense of national identity.Yet to many Americans living in 1801, the answer was far less certain. The United States existed. The nation did not—not in the modern sense. Most citizens still identified first with their state and only second with the Union. A Virginian was a Virginian before he was an American. A citizen of […]

The Original Confederation

For most Americans today, the story seems straightforward. Independence came in 1776. The Constitution followed. George Washington became president. The United States was born. But that is not what happened. Between independence and the Constitution lay nearly a decade of political experimentation. During those years, the United States existed not as the federal republic familiar to modern Americans, but as a loose confederation of states. Congress met. Diplomats negotiated treaties. Armies […]
