As for hardware alternatives to Kindle, I like Kobo and Boox.
The Kobo Clara is the best single-store eReader I've used, and it's also able to connect to Libby/Overdrive (for library borrowing) and Instapaper.
Boox makes e-ink Android devices, so you can install any reader app you want on them (plus other apps like Wallabag, or a feed reader, or even use it for web or email if you want to). I used a Poke3 for almost 5 years before upgrading to a Go 7 Color II last fall.

I’ve used Hive Books off and on for a number of years as my antidote to Amazon and they are generally very good.
You can also choose to have a small percentage of your purchase donated to an independent local bookshop of your choice.
However, I have no idea if they can deliver before this Christmas.

Das Problem dabei ist, dass es eine Übersicht von Händlern nach Kategorien ist. Kategorien funktionieren aber im realen Leben selten. Was man m.E. bräuchte um Amazon etwas entgegen zu halten, wäre eine offene Platform auf die Händler Produkte laden können und in der man bei der Suche nach einem Produkt dann die Händler findet. Das ohne die verzerrende Wirkung von Google u. Co., eine Art ProduktPedia mit Händler API.

These days when I look for a specific eBook I'll often check the author's and publisher's websites first, and see if it's available from them directly. Or if they have a preferred source.
