One of the things about airplane crashes that runs counter-intuitive to our expectations about disasters is that the crash is announced by silence.
Silence on the radio. Silence from the crew of the aircraft. Absence from the radar. Uncertainty - is this just a temporary problem? Only as the minutes pass does the uncertanty solidify into certainty - of disaster.
(Yes, I like watching air crash documentaries. Don't you?)
