Status: Visible Zork 3 is now in progress. Patreon supporters will see it on March 1st. Unless you're in the "see it right away" tier, in which case you'll be getting a link shortly.
I am now committing to finish Zork 3, Deadline, and Starcross by the end of May. Woot!

I was wrong, because there's also a bug in the final release version of Zork II where the dragon will come back to life if you get yourself killed. Which means you can lead the dragon all the way to the end of the game.
I think I'm going to call him George.
But at least I can be 100% sure he won't follow me into Zork III.
So how far can you get the dragon to follow you anyway?
Not up the volcano obviously, because to get there you need to get rid of the dragon once and for all. And not into the Wizard's domain, because you can't get the key until after you get rid of the dragon.
Unless you're willing to exploit another bug: If you try to unlock the door, there's a random chance that you will drop the key even if you're not carrying the key.
But that's probably as far as it goes. Maybe?
Playing some Zork II. That's one determined dragon!
Looking at the source code, it looks like the intention is that the dragon should stop following you if you reach the boundaries of his area. At that point, he has a 25% chance of growing bored and returning to his lair, and a 75% chance of staying angry.
If he stays angry, even though he didn't follow you into this room he will still follow you into the next one if you balance things just right.
More on Zork bugs. (I may be blogging a lot of these…)
