This YA story is at once a serious look at repressed trauma (personal and societal) and a sensitive examination of diversity and compassion. A wonderful introduction to community and responsibility.

Hello all, #firstpost here. No idea how to work this crazy thing (I know I’m not the only n00b walking in and saying so). But hey, I’m a #comics creator turned prose writer person (she/her/chan). I’m currently working on adapting my graphic novel series #TheGodMachine into a #yanovel series. I’ve been in the comics/illustration industry since the mid 00s. Sadly, in early 2024 I further injured in my wrists, making it impossible to continue my career in the arts world as a sustainable means of income. Through self introspection, and determination to do something creative, I am becoming something I feared I could not be: a writer. Imposter syndrome used to color my world when it came to writing. I always thought I was an artist who happened to write their own comics, but surely I was no good at that. I’ve dusted off that negative voice and I’m embracing a new me as I continue to tell my stories. There’s much more to tell, but I thought I’d get the pout out. Haha. Also- I’m am not a technical writer and I am a typo demon :D welcome to my nonsense ♥️ (also if you want to come along my path of writing come join my patreon patreon.com/spookychan

Book Review: Cut Off at the Throat by Oisín McGann

Book review of Cut off at the Throat by Oisín McGann about a group of privileged teens who are stranded on an island with no food or communication with the outside world.

MARK KIELTY

"That is why I think the first, most basic step in these matters is to start with the moments of real feeling in your life, when your heart is truly moved, and to think about the meaning of those. The things that you feel most deeply, from the very bottom of your heart, will never deceive you in the slightest. And so at all times, in all things, whatever feelings you may have, consider these carefully.

If you do this, then someday, somewhere, a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience will leave a deep impression on you, and you will come to understand something that has a meaning that is not just limited to that one moment. That thought will be an idea that is truly your own.

To put it a slightly more difficult way, you must make a habit of thinking honestly, with your own experience as a foundation, and-Copper, this is very important!—if some one fakes this part, no matter what kind of great-sounding things they think or say, they are all lies in the end."

— Genzaburō Yoshino: How Do You Live?, p. 48

Moving passage. I think we sometimes forget how much our intuitions and deepest feelings can guide us well if we only listen.

How Do You Live? - BookWyrm

First published in 1937, Genzaburō Yoshino’s How Do You Live? has long been acknowledged in Japan as a crossover classic for young readers. The novel is narrated in two voices. The first belongs to Copper, fifteen, who after the death of his father must confront inevitable and enormous change, including his own betrayal of his best friend. In between episodes of Copper’s emerging story, his uncle writes to him in a journal, sharing knowledge and offering advice on life’s big questions as Copper begins to encounter them. Over the course of the story, Copper, like his namesake Copernicus, looks to the stars, and uses his discoveries about the heavens, earth, and human nature to answer the question of how he will live.

This first-ever English-language translation of a Japanese classic about finding one’s place in a world both infinitely large and unimaginably small is perfect for readers of philosophical fiction like The Alchemist and The Little Prince, as well as Miyazaki fans eager to understand his many influences.

This book was my wife’s Christmas present to me this year. This book is Miyazaki’s favorite book and was a tangential inspiration for his film “The Boy and the Heron.” Enjoying it so far - a nice coming of age story with a philosophical bent.
