@solarflarealert Isn't that the 2nd X-class flare today? Ruh roh is right!

#Wikipedia - 2003 Halloween #SolarStorms

"The Halloween solar storms were a series of solar storms involving solar flares and coronal mass ejections that occurred from mid-October to early November 2003, peaking around October 28–29. This series of storms generated the largest solar flare ever recorded by the GOES system, modeled as strong as X45 (initially estimated at X28 due to saturation of GOES' detectors).

Effects On Earth

"Satellite-based systems and communications were affected, aircraft were advised to avoid high altitudes near the polar regions, and a one-hour-long power outage occurred in Sweden as a result of the solar activity. Aurorae were observed at latitudes as far south as Texas and the Mediterranean countries of Europe. Twelve transformers in South Africa were disabled and had to be replaced, despite the country's low geomagnetic latitude.

On satellites and spacecraft

"The SOHO satellite failed temporarily and the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) was damaged by the solar activity. Numerous other spacecraft were damaged or experienced downtime due to various issues. Some of them were intentionally put into safe mode in order to protect sensitive equipment. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) had to stay inside the more shielded parts of the Russian Orbital Segment to protect themselves against the increased radiation levels.

"Emissions from the CME were later observed by the Mars Odyssey spacecraft orbiting Mars, Ulysses spacecraft near Jupiter, and the Cassini spacecraft en route to Saturn. In April 2004, Voyager 2 was also able to detect them as they reached the spacecraft."

No #GeomagneticStorm predicted yet. But with former #AR3664 (now #AR3697) belching out big flares, we might be in for another #Aurora treat soon...

#XFlares Are Piling Up

June 1, 2024 @ 10:20 UTC

"Good morning. How about another X-Flare!

"The latest event measuring X1.4 was just detected around AR 3697 (3664) at 08:48 UTC (Jun 1). Much like the X-Flare yesterday evening, a CME does not appear to be associated with this event. Some dimming was observed to the north of 3697 before this event, but coronagraph imagery does not seem to reveal any plasma leaving the Sun. The flare producing machine is now in a good location for potential Earth directed eruptions.

"And with this now being the 49th X-Flare of the current solar cycle, we have tied the X-Flare total from the previous solar cycle 24. When will #50 take place? Stay tuned to find out."

#SolarFlare Alert (via #SolarHam):

Strongest Flare of Current Cycle and CME

December 14, 2023 @ 18:30 UTC (Updated)

"The strongest solar flare of the current solar cycle in terms of peak X-Ray flux was just detected around AR 3514 @ 17:02 UTC (Dec 14). The X2.8 event is responsible for a coronal mass ejection (#CME) that may have an Earth directed component. A type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 2118 km/s was recorded. More to follow regarding this major event.

"Earth Directed CME: Updated imagery courtesy of STEREO Ahead shows a fast moving halo CME leaving the Sun following the X2.8 event. A passage past our planet will be possible within 48-72 hours. Stay tuned.

"ALERT: Type II Radio Emission
Begin Time: 2023 Dec 14 1708 UTC
Estimated Velocity: 2118 km/s

"A nice transitional line between positive and negative polarity is present, hence the potential for strong solar flares. This region will likely remain a threat for another major event during the next 24 hours."

Region 3514 has already produced two strong M-class #solarflares, and one X-class #solarflare
