"Miss Simpson's Boots," Sir William Nicholson, 1919.

Nicholson (1872-1949) was a prominent British painter, printmaker, illustrator, author, and theatrical designer. Whew!

He was born to a wealthy family which allowed him the space to study art and take it up as a profession. He married Scottish artist Mabel Pryde, and his children included Ben Nicholson (prominent Abstract artist), Annie Nicholson (artist, fabric designer, wife of Robert Graves), and Christopher Nicholson (architect). Ben's children Kate and Simon also became artists.

I like the simplicity of this composition; just a couple of pairs of boots and a watch. But this is also a great demonstration of how everyday, mundane objects can become art.
