Before becoming an opera singer he was an elite soldier, serving in Iraq during the first Gulf War. Ukrainian war veterans with amputated limbs find freedom in the practice of jiu-jitsu
More than 20,000 people in Ukraine have lost limbs because of injuries since the start of Russia’s brutal war there, many of them soldiers. Some of them have learned to deal with their psychological trauma by practicing a form of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. A half-dozen veterans recently competed in the “para jiu-jitsu” category in the Ukrainian national tournament. Artem Kuzmich, who lost a leg on the battlefield in 2019, says jiu-jitsu can easily be adapted for people with amputated limbs without the need for prosthetics. Vasyl Oksyntiuk lost both legs during fighting last December. The 26-year-old says when he competes in jiu-jitsu, he forgets that he's lacking anything.
