It's National Gingerbread Day, USA!

We’re not sure why our nation celebrates gingerbread in summer, but here’s a flashback to staff member Bama Brokaw’s wintery recreation of the Summit at Snoqualmie in which she reproduced all four base areas and I-90!

Sadly, you cannot find this at the museum as it was perishable. If you're lucky, though, you may be able to find Bama here coordinating volunteers and being awesome!

In addition to selling crisp new books, I have a library with ski and snowboard related reading material for all ages that folks can read while visiting!

(Psst... Want to read one of these books outside of the museum? Volunteers get the ability to sign materials out to read at home!)

Check out this antique touring setup from the 1930’s. You can see it in person this weekend (Fri-Sun) between noon and five!

Skins are sticky strips of material that go on the underside of a touring ski to help users go uphill with less effort. Once upon a time, they were actual animal skins. Now they’re highly engineered manmade materials.

With Washington lift service down to weekends only, you might be curious about ski touring. We have an exhibit about that!

And if the exhibit spurs your curiosity, we can hook you up with a copy of Lowell Skoog's book Written in Snows, which has an entire chapter on Washington mountaineers.

Got some of my light bulbs changed today and I'm feeling BRIGHT! I hope the rest of Washington is feeling just as good!

So.... Here's the full picture of the mystery exhibit!

It's a sit ski! Sit skis are adaptive equipment designed to bring the joys of skiing to individuals with physical limitations that make standing while skiing impossible. This one was ridden by Washingtonian Shannon Bloedel in the 1992 Winter Paralympics, where she won Silver.

On days when I'm closed to the public, I like to meditate on the nature of human connections to my exhibits. It always makes me happy when a visitor lights up and starts to tell others about how they remember being inspired when they saw their first sit-skier, or when they were bewildered to behold their first snowboard, or what a lovely person one of our honorees is/was. What stories will I hear this weekend? I can't wait to find out!

Hey! My local mountaintop museum, The Washington State Ski and Snowboard Museum, has joined Mastodon! (Because I told them it was better than X...) Give them some support?
