W.R. Burnett's High Sierra, a great noir novel by a great writer. A bank robber just out of jail gets mixed up in a heist with a bunch of amateurs and a girl. He used to be a big shot. Now he's tired and fatalistic. The book packs a real punch.

Nathan Juran's Law and Order, a 1953 remake of the extraordinarily dark 1932 western of the same name, based on the W.R. Burnett novel Saint Johnson.

With Ronald Reagan in the role played by Walter Huston in the '32 film. The '53 version is OK but nowhere near as good as the original.

You should never remake a truly great movie.
