Mid-career academics: Defining mid-career and identifying barriers and enablers for success.

WIASN have been commissioned by the EasternArc https://easternarc.ac.uk/about-us/ to better understand what is meant by academic 'mid-career' and how to better support academics in this career stage. The Eastern Academic Research Consortium, or Arc, brings together three radical, interdisciplinary universities on the eastern seaboard of England: the University of East Anglia, the University of Essex, and the University of Kent. This survey is intended to capture the opinions and experience of academic staff who are 1. Currently working in the UK on an academic contract. OR 2. Have left the UK HE system but have significant (more than 2 years) and recent (within the last 2 years) academic experience of UK academia on an academic contract or an independent researcher working on contracts with UK universities or research funders. 3. Have completed their PhD and are at least 2 years from completion OR who are an academic without a PhD but have more than 2 years experience on an academic contract. *We include independent researchers who work on contract for UK universities OR receive(d) grant funding from a UK research funder. Use of personal information / GDPR This survey forms part of a wider consultation. All data will be extracted from the google form, dis-aggregated and anonymised. The Google Doc containing the source information will be deleted once the report is final and signed off (By sept 2023) The findings will be presented as anonymised and generalised themes (with some anonymous quotes where necessary) to EasternArc senior management as well as an outline version / slides EasternArc will share in other forums as evidence of best practice to improve UK research culture. We will collect diversity demographics to surface (where we are able) issues of equity and inclusion (with an intersectional lens). However, this information will be anonymised and presented in themes rather than individual responses. We will not be asking for your name or institution. If you submit names or institutions these will be removed from the data set for confidentiality reasons. There is no expectation that you will complete all of the questions. You have the right to not complete all questions. You have the right to withdraw at any point in the survey process; including after submission to do so please use the contact for this survey (you may have to provide some additional detail so we can ascertain your answers since this is an anonymous survey). Completing this survey you consent to the principles of the collection of data as set out here and confirm your acceptance of our data privacy policy. The consultation report will follow our WIASN Privacy code and data protection policy for conducting consultant and/or research. Available here https://www.wiasn.org/blank-page-2 For any further information about the consultation, this survey or to withdraw your answers please contact Dr Kelly Pickard-Smith [email protected]
