I ordered my third green tea shochu.” It isn’t what I usually drink, but since everyone else was drinking green stuff, and it was a limited special, I figured, “Why not?” It was good.
Tsugumi had been drinking the same thing, but after calling it “froufrou” she’d switched to ordering a cube of chartreuse jelly.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“Emerald Slider,” she said. “Don’t ask me what it is, but it looked fun.”
That didn’t tell me anything.
Everything was green. Green crepe ribbons festooned the room. Funny little paper youkai with shiny Emerald hats and shamrocks decorated the mirrors. Many people wore that color.
“Even the sign is green,” I said, waving at a large green sign with unintelligible English writing on it.
“Yeah,” Tomo said, toasting me with a green beer.
Beyond Tomo, I could see that Matsumoto had trapped Ume. She was waving a melon soda cocktail in Ume’s face while drunkenly saying for the third time, “You did good, but you still owe me yakiniku.”
Ume just shook her head modestly and sipped a brilliant green cocktail.
That left only Shishi, the designated driver, who was drinking sencha and looking bored.
When we arrived, all the rooms and tables were full. But we all squeezed in at the bar. Tonight, we were celebrating the sale of Ume’s book, “For Love of a Konbini Idol,” based on our adventures.
From down the bar, a heavily accented voice said, “Meron soda. Arukoru nashi, arigatogozaimasu.” I guessed they were American because of their terrible accent.
“Ask them why everything is green. They’re American and must know,” a plastered Matsumoto said, chucking Ume in the ribs. “You’re the only one who speaks English.”
“Naw, I wouldn’t want to be rude,” she replied.
“Go on,” Shishi said, joining in the conversation.
Ume shrugged and moved down the bar.
We all laughed. Ume would do just about anything for Shishi.
