They like to greet each other like proper Japanese people. It is terribly boring when I want to get to their conversation. I don't write that part besides saying they greeted each other, so not too bad.

It can also be boring, put some of Ume's high-flying rambling talks in a proper order for readers.

And having a conversation with Kan-chan can be slow. She is not much on talking and uses as few words as she can get away with.

A small price to pay for the entertainment they provide.

Ume: I don't have one right now. Cultist drove us out while I was away. When I get back to Japan, we are going to buy my grandfather's house. It's an old place from a previous era. We also need to buy the forest, sakura trees, and the mountain behind the manor.

Some of it thrills me, but living near my parents is terrifying. I think it scares me more than Kashima-san did.

#WritersCoffeeClub April 20. What rôle does religion play in your writing?

Buddhism and Shinto beliefs play a large role in my stories. They are the basis of the magic system. Most of the characters enter the stage as humanist skeptics, but in the face of their experiences embrace those belief systems. Shino probably plays a bigger role of the two.

If I ever write something set in the West, it will probably have a blending of shamanism, mysticism, and esoteric Christianity. Nothing fundies would approve of.

If anyone ever challenges me over cultural appropriation, I will just respond that I am a Buddhist Animist, so I am not appropriating anything. And have received formal training in both.

I used to do manual labor, loading and unloading trucks, but I got moved to temp status after I started missing work. It wasn't my fault, I didn't know time was screwed up in Kakuriyo. Or that I was going to wander into it.

Now I work loading trucks when they need extra labor and write full-time. That's going well between selling a series and ghost writing.,

Of course.

Ume: I wary of people. I know I don't fit in most places, and people will disapprove of the choices I've made. By that token, I know a few people I trust and will stand by them. To the death if I have to. I know that because I've faced death for them, and only the luck of the blind god saved me.
