#GreatAlbums1990s – #PearlJam – #Ten (1991). I hesitated to include this, because it inspired more shitty knockoffs than anything since Appetite for Destruction – although that isn’t PJ’s fault – and it’s always sounded like it was recorded from the far end of an aircraft hangar. Still, there’s a half dozen great songs here – “Even Flow,” “Alive” and the scintillating “Black,” etc. For years it was the yarl heard around the world, but #Vitalogy will always be my Pearl Jam jam. #GreatRockAlbums

Recorded as PJ basked in the hazy afterglow of massive success, Vitalogy was a harder, looser affair in which cracks begin to show in the band’s formerly heroic edifice. Allusions to the White Album inform the weirder moments, like “Bugs,” and the helter-skelter grind of “Spin the Black Circle” and “Satan’s Bed” give PJ an edge over the refinements of the earlier two albums.
