The answer to the photo challenge I posted yesterday is: Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia).

The red and black discs are the plant's adhesive pads, and they are still doing their jobs (sticking) long after the plant has senesced and blown away. In the photograph below you can make out a single tendril (lower left, out of focus) that is still attached to one of the discs. The pads look remarkably like eyelash fungi and lichens.
