Heh, I was able to get vttest cursor movement test passing w/MS-Kermit 3.16 so I pushed some patches to Github: https://github.com/aakoskin/MSK316

I think I'll choose MS-Kermit as my 16-bit #DOS terminal program. At least I have the source code. The proprietary MS (MASM/C v6) toolchain is struggling on 640 KB RAM with some of those biggest files, but eventually succeeds, and I can still improve the program for my needs.

What is the best #VT102 #terminal emulator for 16-bit #DOS?

Tried several 80s/90s programs with "vttest" and all fail the cursor movement test (even when ignoring the 132-column mode, who cares about widescreen).

#MSKermit 3.16 was best and got it almost right. Since it's nowadays under BSD license w/source available, maybe I'll just try to fix it. Failing test is pictured. Cursor stuff at right margin is difficult to get right, agreed #DEC manual is pretty vague.

I took a lid from jewel box that matched the oak frame dimensions to complete the casing. It's a wooden tablet! Also downgraded to #RaspberryPi Zero 2 W so plenty of room inside. Still, a full-blown #ARM64 #Linux.

It will run dashboard w/#GNU Screen or Lynx etc. to show e.g. #teletext spotprices, weather etc. or random #ANSIart.

Prototyping display mechanics for my never-ending concept #VT102 terminal project. Oak frame with real glass cost 7 e from the local shop. The passepartout is a bit rough, but it's the best I could do before getting some sharper knives. Maybe I could replace it with a veneer sheet.

vttest is cool.

I remember running such in the 1980s. At the time it wasn't a C program yet, but a text file and you ran it with simply "cat vttest" at looked at the result.

For vttest terminal needs to implement ESC#8 which according to manual is "used by DIGITAL Manufacturing and Field Service personnel". It fills the screen with 'E's.

Hey, DEC enthusiasts-- I have a blown power supply from a VT102 sitting on a shelf. I haven't been able to diagnose it and I'm unlikely to do so in the future. Is anyone interested in taking it for parts? Happy to ship it within the US.

I think I'm finally able to continue my project to make a #VT102 compatible e-ink terminal, as I was able to find a copy of the original #Digital VT102 manual, documenting all those escape sequences.

Does anyone else miss the days when there were physical books you could consult while programming?

@northernlights My peak productivity was with #edt/ #ked on #vt102. From there #ex/ #vi felt like a step down and so #vim/ #neovim remains a path never to be taken. Ported my own #microemacs around for some time. These days will use #pico/ #nano for quick things, #emacs otherwise or because #slime. Had #brief (😜 ) run-in with #teco, memory of which is buried, because trauma, granting only a bonus giggle reading "Real Programmers Don't Use Pascal". Didn't #notepad win the #editor war in the end?
