๐ŸŒŒ THE SKY THIS WEEK: DEC 19โ€“26, 2025 ๐ŸŒŒ
Winter officially arrives with the solstice on Dec. 21, giving us the longest nights of the year โ€” prime observing time. Jupiter blazes in the evening sky, while Venus shines before dawn. The Ursid meteor shower peaks around Dec. 22, and the Moon cooperates for much of the week. Holiday lights are optional โ€” the skyโ€™s doing fine on its own

One of 2024โ€™s Last #MeteorShowers Is About to Reach Its Peak
The astronomical event, which overlaps with the Winter #Solstice, is often overlooked because of the winter chill.
#Meteors from the #Ursids appear near the Little Dipper, which is part of the constellation Ursa Minor. Only skywatchers in the Northern Hemisphere will have a chance of seeing this shower. Moon will be just over half full, making streaks in sky even more challenging to spot.

Not long now till the #Geminid meteor shower, the second-best of the year, which peaks on 13-14 December. The Moon will be just past new, so when the radiant is high in the southeast around midnight, rates of 20-50 per hour are possible โ€“ if you have clear skies!

Also in December, the #Ursids (URS) peak on 23rd however the Moon will be waxing gibbous and so donโ€™t expect much more than one or two meteors per hour.
