Winter officially arrives with the solstice on Dec. 21, giving us the longest nights of the year — prime observing time. Jupiter blazes in the evening sky, while Venus shines before dawn. The Ursid meteor shower peaks around Dec. 22, and the Moon cooperates for much of the week. Holiday lights are optional — the sky’s doing fine on its own

It's always a good week to look at the sky and early risers will see Mars and Saturn begin to pull away from each other in the early morning - Jupiter sets quickly at sunset. Vega, the Summer Star, and the Summer Triangle are now appearing earlier and earlier even though we're still 7 weeks from the solstice. Bits and pieces of Halley's Comet usher in the Eta Aquariid meteor shower on the 4th.
