After watching an eye-opening story about US presidential pets on PBSNewsHour, I had to look up more details.
Did you know that President Roosevelt had a pet badger called Josiah? Josiah was presented to Roosevelt in Kansas by 12-year old Perl Gorsuch and named after Perl’s father.
President Coolidge had a pet raccoon called Rebecca. Rebecca had been sent to the White House to be eaten as part of the thanksgiving dinner but they didn’t want to eat her.
“At times, she [Rebecca] could be mischievous and was known to unscrew lightbulbs, open cabinets, and unpot houseplants. She was known to nestle in Coolidge's lap when he sat by the fireplace.”
Later, when President Hoover was in the White House, a possum moved into Rebecca’s old cage and Hoover called it Billy, in reference to President Taft’s unsuccessful attempts to replace Teddy Bears as toys with Billy Possums.
(This is back when US presidential politics could be fun.)
