@youronlyone I first saw her in #kDrama #SummerStrike and then seeing er play a COIMPLETELY different character in #TwinklingWatermelon blew me away. She was the only reason I endured that underwhelming overblown mess to the tedious end. #I'll be watching #LoveUntangled today

I don't know why he chose to not speak at all after. Does that happen to all who become disabled not by birth?

After being disappointed in the otherwise fine #kdrama #TwinklingWatermelon regarding use of #SignLanguage and actually ensuring the sign language is fully on-screen, I decided to watch the 2004 #jdrama #OrangeDays.

It is a bit after-school-special-y, about 5 university students who become friends, one of whom was a violin prodigy who lost her hearing. But the sign language was fully on display for all of their conversations!

Day 26: most disappointing drama of 2023

Twinkling Watermelon

Don't get me wrong: I enjoyed many parts of this series.

What was disappointing for me was, even though so much of the story is about the main character being a child of Deaf parents, and a big chunk of it includes learning and speaking in Korean sign language, they centered the HEARING characters more, and even framed too many scenes with the sign language slightly cut off or out of frame.

Yay for more visibility and representation of disabilities and sign language! But they could have done it better. My disappointment was higher because my expectations were higher.

Episode 15: aka Jill ugly cries

#kdrama #TwinklingWatermelon

I love how much of this series focuses on the experiences of Deaf people and learning Korean Sign Language. But it shows that the director is a hearing person because the sign language is too often just out of frame.

I think it was @IkkleGemzUniverse who mentioned finishing the #kdrama #TwinklingWatermelon and liking it. I just finished episode 10 and have some thoughts.

  • Choi Hyun-wook's role in #TwentyFiveTwentyOne was so great, and I can see why they offered the lead role in this. He is an adorable, energetic ball of joy. I hope he keeps getting good roles.
  • Ryeoun's character grates on me, but I think that's on purpose. He acts very patronizing towards his parents and peers, like he is the only capable adult. But I think that is key to his character growth.
  • Seol In-ah is an actress I confuse with Kim Ji-won often, and when I saw her in #ABusinessProposal I thought she was much closer to 30, yet here she plays an 18yo. She is 27 in real life!
  • Shin Eun-soo's character, up until episode 10, really felt quiet and empty with no internal dialogue or thoughts. She seems MUCH younger than Seol In-ah's character, even though they are all supposed to be 18yos. Both she and Choi Hyun-wook are the youngest, at age 21.
