Many years ago, someone tried to get me into cryptocurrencies. "They're the future of money!" they said. I replied saying that I'd rather wait until they were more useful, less volatile, easier to use, and utterly reliable. "You don't want to get left behind, do you?" They countered. The IT industry is disheartingly trend-driven. Today it's AI, yesterday it was blockchain and before that it was big data, IoT, micro-services and many other.
I don't know to what degree that's caused by venture capital looking for the next big thing to drive market enthusiasm, and to what degree it's caused by tech-optimism and magical thinking within the industry itself.
