I’ve published a new research report:

**Solo Washing in Travel: A Framework for Evaluating Solo-Friendly Claims**

As solo travel grows, more travel products are described as “solo-friendly,” but not all meaningfully support solo travelers.

This paper introduces the concept of *solo washing* and provides a structured framework to evaluate these claims across pricing, design, transparency, and user experience.

Solo Washing in Travel: A Framework for Evaluating Solo-Friendly Claims

Solo travel has become an increasingly visible segment of global tourism, accompanied by a growing number of travel products marketed as “solo-friendly.” However, not all offerings meaningfully accommodate solo travelers. This report introduces the concept of “solo washing,” defined as the presentation of a travel product or service as suitable for solo travelers without providing structural support, equitable pricing, or a comparable user experience. The report develops a structured evaluation framework across four dimensions: pricing structure, accommodation and design, transparency and communication, and user experience. A scoring model is introduced to operationalize the framework, enabling classification of offerings along a spectrum from “solo-washed” to “strongly solo-friendly.” To demonstrate application, the framework is applied to selected real-world travel offerings, highlighting differences between marketing claims and actual conditions experienced by solo travelers. These examples illustrate how pricing practices, accommodation design, and communication strategies can create measurable gaps in solo traveler support. This publication is a conceptual framework supported by applied evaluation examples. It is intended to provide a reusable method for researchers, travel professionals, and independent travelers to assess solo-friendly claims and improve transparency in the travel industry.
