Okay, #ProxMox is a huge pain in the ass and complains if you don't use the subscription update files.

On to trying #FreedomBox. It says it can be installed on Debian. Is that the base terminal, or can I have the gnome GUI?

Yeah...

I think I'm giving up on this install of Yuno Host. Too many things have gone wrong during my leading bash etc.

A friend wants me to try Proxmox, so I'll do that. Another potential one is Freedombox.

So we'll see.

I'd love if there was one that sat on top of a regular distro of Linux with a GUI. I think that'd really help me. Haven't found one yet though.

I have to admit, I'm tempted to buy one of these:

https://shop.fyralabs.com/products/suzyq-board

They help unbrick and modify chromebooks. I've thought I could buy EoL/bricked ones and resuscitate them with linux and sell them for a marginal profit. Like, in the $30-50 range.

One tech project at a time though.

Hey, does anyone know of any good online resources for teaching port forwarding and DNS stuff? I'm trying to set up a server and hitting my head against a wall. Bonus points if it's Linux/Debian specific and/or can be accomplished without an internet connection.

Got the computer today! Looks good for a little workstatioin and runs fine. I'll post pictures later. Installing #YunoHost atm. I was told it would only be a few minutes, but that's assuming a VPS with SSDs. I'm using that 5200rpm HDD and it's s l o w . Think I'll get tot he end of the DNS stuff and give up for the day.

Is there any official #Debian forum/Matrix/IRC/ Tin cans and string for asking questions and getting help? Or barring an official one, an unofficial one? Bonus points for being queer positive.

Thanks!

Well that's neat. I've been looking for a lightweight linux distro to try on my potato, (a windows tablet with 1GB of RAM.) and I found that #Q4OS allows you to install it from within the windows screen. That will allow the computer to dual boot. You can even go into BIOS and change it to the default boot.

One of the reasons I haven't converted it yet, (aside from lazy,) is that I might need a windows machine to talk to my printer. This might work out without me having to fight it to do a proper dual boot. The other is it's weird ass processor, am Intel Atom x5 Z8350 .

Thing could barely run windows 10

Well, after much dicking around and needing to use both gParted and Disks, I formatted my live Mint USB and slapped Vently on it. That also took some trial and error. After I realized I didn't download a live version kg Debian and it just wanted to install, I gave up testing it for the night and just shoved a bunch of OSes on the drive since its a big one.

I got:
Debian GNOME, Manjaro Xfice, Bazzite, Tails, Elementary, and Pop. I also did some research a bit ago for OSes on weak devices. I need to find that and download those to put on my potato. Since I'll have a blank slate with the ThinkCenter, I'll try out several.

Won a computer!

A used Lenovo ThinkCenter M710q. No hard drive, but its got decent ram and an it processor. Didn't come with a hdmi port either, but I bought one that will hopefully work. Otherwise I'm going to be trying to use a monitor at work to see if it operates at all as I don't have anything with a displayport orifice at home.

I'll try my old live drive for Mint on it. Though if it does wrok, I'm going to buy a cheap ssd, (if the old sata from my laptop doesn't fit,) and put Debian on it.

If all goes well, it'll live in a cabinet next to my router and become a cloud.

Fingers crossed!
