How to Setup #BIND #DNS Server on #Ubuntu #VPS Here's a step-by-step guide demonstrating how to setup BIND DNS server on Ubuntu VPS. This will walk you through installing BIND9, configuring it as a primary (master) DNS server, setting up a domain zone, and ensuring it runs securely and correctly.
What is BIND DNS?
BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) is the most widely used DNS server software on the Internet. It acts as the backbone of DNS (Domain Name ...

Forward to ISP's DNS servers.
Forward to a DNS service (1.1.1.1, 9.9.9.9, etc).
Recursively resolve from root servers directly.
Encrypt my DNS using DoH, DoT, etc.

@jmb I use NSD as authoritative for my local zones and Unbound as recursive resolver. Unbound uses non-logging public upstream resolvers accessed using DNSCrypt. I have some other complexities in there including adblocking via Unbound RP zones and different instances of NSD responsible for different zones (eg, in the DMZ).

Modern, open source DHCPv4 & DHCPv6 server

I self-host the DNS for my domains for more than 20 years now.

2026 now finally was the year, where I decomissioned the last BIND server and replaced it with a PowerDNS, containerized in Podman  and a SQLite backend.

I already migrated the hidden-primariy to PowerDNS in 2022 (because of the REST API, compatibility with Traefik, easier DNSSEC handling and the higher flexibility) and now my secondaries are also migrated.

Nontheless, BIND was one of the most stable pieces of technology that I've ever used. But it also felt a bit unwieldy and old-fashined ins some ways.

Some of the inner workings of @limeleaf 's https://probes.dev is using Go's net/http/httptrace package which gives you very handy information.

I was just looking at #NextDNS 🤔

What is people's experience with it?
I was thinking about setting it up for a phone that will be in children's hands to keep them protected from bad shit on the web.

The free tier allows 300,000 queries per month... which should be MORE than enough for a kid with limited screentime 🤔

privacy-wise, they seem to be base in France, log retention can be disabled, the account can be set up anonymously 🤔

Anyone using NextDNS? thoughts? other solutions? (other solutions should please NOT contain the mother of the kid selfhosting pihole with wireguard lmao)
