1. Cattails. August 14, 2023. Mackinaw City, Michigan.
Another surprise sunset, this time after a grey day as my wife and I drove north along the coast of Lake Michigan. I love the violets and pinks and the puffy clouds and the cattails in silhouette. And I love that it reminds me of a splendid evening during our brief vacation to the north. Truly a special sunset.

2. Tree Topper. June 7, 2023. Wolverine Lake, Michigan.
For a while this summer when the skies were smoky the Sun was setting far enough north that I could catch it setting on top of this pine tree on the north shore of Wolverine Lake. I did catch it exactly on the top of the tree once, but the colors in this one made it my favorite tree topper of 2023 and one of my favorite photos of the year.

3. Surprise Sunset! November 5, 2023.
It had been a grey day all day. I headed out on the pontoon to catch a few waterfowl shots because the water was still. Suddenly as I headed home a little patch of red popped up on the horizon. Just a few minutes later these colors were above and below and all over. Just a crazy surprise. Five minutes later, the colors were gone.

5. Golden Impressionism. McGulpin Point, Mackinaw City, Michigan. August 16, 2023.
Golden sunlight lights its path through a gap in the clouds as we watched a sunset over Lake Michigan from McGulpin Point in the Straits of Mackinac. This was an extraordinary sight in person -- more like an Impressionist painting than reality -- and it made for an extraordinary photo.

Every now and then an evening hatch of one sort or another rises from the lake between me and the sunset. On this evening the newly hatched insects created this lovely sparkle effect above the Sun.

8. Smoky Sunspots. May 23, 2023. Wolverine Lake, Michigan.
The smoke from the Canadian wildfires acted as a solar filter in the sky for much of the spring. There were several large outbreaks of sunspots on the Sun during this period. As you've already seen, this led to a lot of pictures of sunspots this year. This one was one of my favorites.

9. Lavender Light. April 21, 2023.
If this looks familiar it's because I've posted a few other photos from this sunset. The surface of the lake was a mirror. The light swept through many colors in mere moments.
(This is not the purple sunset I posted at #11. That happened in November. It was a good year for violet in the skies.)

10. West Mountain Silhouette. May 10, 2023. Glens Falls, New York.
I didn't get to see a lot of great sunsets while growing up in Glens Falls because we had a big, long mountain across our western horizon: West Mountain. While I was back there this spring I found a nice location far enough away from the mountain to let me catch several nice ones of the sun setting behind it, this among them.
