Cladonia asahinae, the pixie cup lichen or Asahina's cup lichen, growing from the weathered planks of an old cabin in Huu-ay-aht Territory on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. This clump looked particularly extraterrestrial with its tiny "fingers"; perhaps better named "pax"ie cup.

I think this is an invasive European brown garden snail, which may be mistaken for the Pacific Sideband Snail (also found on Vancouver Island). I am in awe of how it wraps its body around the old stalks in the garden, exploring slowly with its upper tentacles (vision) and lower tentacles (for feeling and smelling).

Cladonia asahinae, the pixie cup lichen or Asahina's cup lichen, is near the top of my favorite things to photograph list. It engages my sense of child-like wonder and reminds me of the amazing range of tiny life, largely unnoticed, around us all the time.
