#sketchbook April 2026. Last few days have been pretty rough, so I find myself listening to some pretty rough material. Specifically, avant-garde saxophonist #TimBerne. Mostly his "Caos Totale" unit and the one album he did with Bill Frisell. Good, noisy, energetic. This #drawing was done in parallel pen on Bristol.

Tonight: when Tim Berne plays Lowlands it's kind of can't-miss for me. One of those perfect gigs for the space situations. Same band as last week with the addition of Aurora Nealand. Bet you didn't know your free jazz band needed an accordion, but damn straight it does! Just a stellar set in a room that has no business masquerading as a jazz club.
Angelica is an album by American guitarist Nels Cline which was released in 1988 by Enja Records.

Very underrated. Great record by Nels Cline featuring his brother Alex on drums and Tim Berne on sax. Cline, who plays both acoustic and electric guitars, is still in the process of finding his own voice as a player but as a composer, he's already excelling. The atmosphere is very much European on this record with a few nods to Spanish music. It's beautful from start to finish.

Tonight: wouldn't miss a Tim Berne Tuesday at Lowlands if I didn't have to. Always a treat to see a band same-but-different a regular gig. Tonight seemed to be especially guitar heavy with lots of shreddy-style solos from Gregg Belisle-Chi, and of course Rainey was sublime.
Tonight: the best distraction... Tim Berne with his core unit (Belisle-Chi + Rainey) doing their semi-usual thing at Lowlands. No big name guests, so a tidy intimate crowd.
Tonight: wild-eyed free form fitting the day's mood. Tim Berne in his usual spot at Lowlands, tonight with a banger of a band: Nels f'in Cline, Elias Stemeseder, and Tom f'in Rainey. Taking things very very deep at Lowlands on a snowy Thursday night. Also Bill Frisell is here and that makes me happy.
