I spoke to a friend in #Beijing today whose grandfather died from #Covid complications. She told me the following: “You wouldn’t believe how many people are cremated daily in BJ now. They’re even running out of cars to pick up the bodies from the hospital. We’re lucky to even get an appointment this quick… We heard from the cremation service place we went to (八宝山) yesterday that they’re cremating about 2000 people a day. That’s just this one spot in BJ.”
While reliable death toll data is predictably absent in #China following the relaxing of #ZeroCovid measures, there are clear signs #pandemic fatalities are increasing. Numerous reports in Western media have noted crematoriums in many Chinese cities are slammed, working around the clock. On a personal note: Two of my colleagues have lost loved ones in the last two days; one lost two grandparents.
