Meg Elison reviews 2009’s animated film The Secret of Kells, which draws inspiration from the recently-digitized Book of Kells, a fabulously illuminated edition of the gospels. But while the film is set at a Christian monastery, it is full of encounters with Paganism, and these encounters are what will draw viewers back to the film again and again.

Just watched The Secret of Kells again, the first of three fantastic films based on Irish folklore by animator Tomm Moore. The film has a very distinct flat visual style, which makes me think of what it might look like if Genndy Tartakovsky was a cubist. I’m not of Irish heritage myself, but I’ve always been fascinated by the traditions and folklore of the culture.
I’ll probably be following this up with Song of the Sea and WolfWalkers in the coming weeks. They’re all so good in different ways that it’s hard to pick a favorite. If you like animation and Irish folktales, see all three!
