The second issue of Derek Kirk Kim’s The Last Mermaid was all I hoped it would be. His art is stunning, and I’m completely in for a mermaid mech pilot and her axolotl sidekick adventuring.
The concept art that ends the issue are a fun peak behind the curtain.

This first collected volume of The Last Mermaid is packed with action, excellent worldbuilding, and a mermaid piloting a mech with her axolotl companion. This has been my favourite ongoing comic this year, and this collection brings together the first arc in a stunning way that feels more kinetic. There’s not a lot of additional content, but the small collection of art to close the volume is lovely. Derek Kirk Kim has created something magical with this comic.

I’m not sure it sticks the landing, but it’s a solid read with plenty of action, danger, and tender moments between the protagonists.

The fifth issue of Derek Kirk Kim’s The Last Mermaid kicked up the danger, action, and stakes, delivering a thrilling comic. It remains my favourite current monthly comic and our mermaid-in-a-mecha’s adventures get more exciting with each issue.
The H.A.V.C.’s water supply grows toxic once more, and the mermaid takes a desperate gamble to speed up her quest. Not only does the gamble backfire, but the mermaid and Torque tumble into mutant territory within the canyons of a volcanic hellscape. A desperate battle ensues!
I’ve been delighted by Derek Kirk Kim’s The Last Mermaid since the first issue, but issue four felt like it kicked things into gear. The protagonist finally has someone to have conversations with and her motivations are opening up. If the promised 25-30 issues of this series materialize, this has been a great opening arc.
Secrets unfold when a mysterious stranger joins the mermaid. At long last, the mermaid reveals her desperate lifelong mission. And much to her shock, the stranger claims to know the way to fulfilling her dream. But can the cautious mermaid put her trust in this enigmatic wanderer?
