Shirley Jones legendary singer of the group The Jones Girls
Still Singing, Still Soaring: Shirley Jones Keeps the Legacy Alive
Head2Toe Magazine proudly recognizes Shirley Jones for her unwavering community activism, musical brilliance. Her powerful legacy continues to uphold in honor of her beloved sisters and iconic R&B trio, The Jones Girls.
The unmistakable voice that led The Jones Girls to chart-topping success has spent her life crafting timeless music. Now, she’s using her platform to give back in meaningful ways.
Raised in Detroit under the guidance of her mother, gospel singer Mary Frazier Jones, Shirley , and her sisters, Brenda and Valorie, were trained early in harmony and stage presence. Their musical journey began in the background. They started by harmonizing behind legendary diva Diana Ross on tour. Even Ross knew they were destined for more. Once telling famed producers Gamble & Huff, “The Jones Girls are too good to be backup singers forever.”
In the Spotlight
And indeed, they were. In 1979, The Jones Girls burst into the spotlight with the infectious hit “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else,”. The song soared to the Top 10 on Billboard’s R&B and Disco charts. This marked the beginning of a run that included fan favorites like “Nights Over Egypt,” “Who Can I Run To,” “Dance Turned Into A Romance,” and “I Just Love the Man.” Their silky harmonies and sophisticated soul made them one of the most beloved girl groups of their era.
When Brenda and Valorie stepped away from the music scene, Shirley continued carrying the torch. In 1986, she released her solo debut Always in the Mood, featuring the No. 1 R&B hit “Do You Get Enough Love,”. The hit held the top spot for three weeks. Her solo success affirmed her place as a powerhouse in her own right.
In 1995, a new generation rediscovered the magic of The Jones Girls. Xscape’s remake of “Who Can I Run To” became a Billboard Top 10 hit. The success of the cover reignited interest in the group’s original music. Consequently, it introduced their legacy to millions of new fans.
In 2024, Shirley released her deeply personal album In Loving Memory: Reflections, a 10-track tribute to her late sisters. The project honors their contributions to music and includes the previously unreleased Jones Girls gem “Baby Don’t Go.” Coinciding with the 45th anniversary of the group’s debut album, the release was a poignant celebration of sisterhood, strength, and soul.

More than music
But Shirley Jones is more than music. She is a force for good. Through her support of New Hope For You, a nonprofit providing scholarships to college-bound high school seniors, and her plans to launch a foundation for women battling addiction and their children, Shirley is turning pain into purpose. It’s a mission close to her heart, as both Brenda and Valorie faced addiction before their untimely passing.

The show doesn’t stop
Even today, Shirley’s voice echoes across the globe. She continues to tour internationally, gracing stages at the Essence Festival, Tom Joyner’s Fantastic Voyage, Soul Train Cruise, London’s Indigo at the O2, Baltic Soul Weekender in Germany, and more. Her story, and that of The Jones Girls, was featured on TV One’s Unsung. This reminds viewers of the group’s enduring impact.
With grace, grit, and a voice that refuses to fade, Shirley Jones stands as a testament to longevity, love, and legacy. Head2Toe Magazine salutes her for her extraordinary contributions to music and community—and for reminding us all that soul never goes out of style.
