Garth’s Dance of Shadows

Amidst the hushed whispers of ancient trees and the serene expanse of The Great Forest, a figure emerges—a creature both enchanting and mischievous, a being whose very essence dances with the unpredictable melodies of life itself. His name is Garth, and within his every step and every mischievous grin, the heart of whimsy finds its playground.

In the heart of nature’s solemnity, Garth stands as a beacon of capricious charm, a trickster whose laughter tinkles like hidden streams, carrying with it the effervescent spirit of play. His origins, like the dance of leaves on a breeze, are veiled in mystery, woven into the very fabric of existence, much like the dappled light that filters through the forest’s embrace.

Born from the reflection of a gnarled branch, Garth’s form is both curious and captivating. His eyes, fashioned from the knots of wood, hold the glint of stars, twinkling with the secrets of ages. A thin neck supports his mischievous visage, a physical manifestation of the quick wit that courses through his veins. With each playful glance, he weaves an enigma that defies the conventional rules of time and space.

Garth’s stature may be small, but his presence is as vast as the boundless sky, his influence echoing through the very heartbeats of The Great Forest. He is the trickster of the denizens, a sprite that hides in the darker corners, watching with keen eyes and a heart brimming with secrets. His laughter, a harmonious melody, intertwines with the whispers of ancient trees, a testament to the profound kinship he shares with the heart of the realm.

Yet, beneath the veneer of charm and mischief, there lies a cleverness that rivals the labyrinthine pathways that wind through the forest’s depths. Garth’s unpredictability is not born from malice, but from a deep-rooted understanding of the ebb and flow of existence—a wisdom that knows the cosmic dance to be both serious and playful, somber and joyous, all at once.

The other Creatures of The Great Forest, their ages measured in the rustling of leaves and the song of brooks, have known Garth for as long as memory can stretch. His origins are as enigmatic as the universe itself, a riddle that even the wise Tel’Gath cannot decipher. He is a living embodiment of the enigma that weaves through existence, a reminder that in the midst of the most intricate tapestries, there exists a thread of the unknown.

Garth’s mischief may be his hallmark, but beneath the jests and pranks lies a soul that understands the delicate balance of creation. His presence reminds all that even in the heart of solemnity, there exists a thread of laughter, a glimmer of light that weaves its way through the fabric of magic. He serves as a testament to the truth that existence is an ever-shifting dance between shadow and light, chaos and order, mystery and revelation.

And so, dear seekers of the enigmatic and the wondrous, as you step into the realm of Garth, let his laughter remind you that life is a symphony—a symphony that harmonizes the notes of chaos and charm, wisdom and whimsy. Embrace the mysteries that dance upon the edges of your perception, for within them lies the essence of Garth, the eternal trickster of The Great Forest, whose origins are as elusive as the echoes of laughter carried by the wind.

Psssst…. The Creatures are part of a series of short stories I wrote called Tales of the Village. The “Creatures” are the wild part, or realm really, and those short stories are about the urban part.

I put together this video for #AnotherPlanet by #TheCreatures (#SiouxsieSioux & #Budgie) years ago. It's a bit disjointed and doesn't synch up with the music, but I sortakinda like it that way. Maybe some day I'll fix it up, but for now...

"I'm here
On another planet
How's it with you
On your planet
All was surreal
On this planet
It felt so regal - it was so romantic
Now it's all changed
And the plot's unfolding
Another fairy tale
With a twisted end

They're coming out the walls
They're seeping in
There's armies of them crawling
They're coming in

Satellite above
Looks down unblinking
Satellite of thought
Unthinking

They're coming out the walls
They're seeping in
Three odd eyed tentacles
Speak in forked tongues
Sprouting all over me
And blossoming
I'm breaking out the walls
I'm coming in

I'm here
On another planet
How's it with you
On your planet

Satellite above
Looks down unblinking
Satellite of thought
Unthinking"

"All you rely on
Here come the storms
To shatter control
From the war lords
Can you feel the power
It turns me on
Unpredictable

Turn it on
Feel the power
Invincible

Won't play their games
But we're a playful thing
Everything to risk
Everything to sink
Gonna change what I can
Accept what I can't
Because I've got the power
Chameleon

Turn it on
Feel the power
Unpredictable
Feel the power
Untamable
Turn it on"

"Mad eyed screamer" - The Creatures

Siouxsie and Budgie made a massive impact coming after four repeats.

They also make a massive impact coming after "The birdie song", from the impenetrably naff to the obscenely cool.

Somehow, I don't think this is a song about nuclear war.

Then it's "Hands up" by Ottowan, with a Legs & Co showgirls dance they could re-use for the new Taylor Swift album.
