St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) is a general acute care hospital in #Houston, Texas owned by #StewardHealthCare. Established in June 1887, SJMC is recognized as the first hospital in Houston. A new hospital was constructed in 1894, but was destroyed by fire soon thereafter. The hospital was rebuilt and it underwent major expansions in 1905 and 1938. The hospital was the largest in the city until the #TexasMedicalCenter was established. The hospital has a capacity of 792 beds.

While Harris County officials are in the middle of discussions about expanding Ben Taub Hospital by acquiring Houston city park land through eminent domain, it could be longer than a decade before the existing hospital gets replaced.

As Harris Health weighs park land seizure, Ben Taub Hospital replacement could take a decade, CEO says

News of a plan to seize nearly 9 acres of Hermann Park for a hospital expansion quickly drew backlash and some concerns late last month from those who oversee the conservancy for the historic park. Officials with Harris Health System, a public healthcare entity of the county, say the seizure is the only feasible way of addressing yearslong infrastructure and crowding issues in the Level 1 trauma center.
