The approval is one of the first steps in the county healthcare system's planned expansion of Ben Taub Hospital — one of the only level 1 trauma facilities in Harris County. The acquisition of park land from the City of Houston also would come before the Houston City Council and Harris County Commissioners Court.

News of a plan to seize nearly 9 acres of Hermann Park for a hospital expansion quickly drew backlash and some concerns late last month from those who oversee the conservancy for the historic park. Officials with Harris Health System, a public healthcare entity of the county, say the seizure is the only feasible way of addressing yearslong infrastructure and crowding issues in the Level 1 trauma center.

The majority of the wooden elephants will be on display in The Commons area in Hermann Park, with a few others scattered throughout the area. The elephants are for sale, with proceeds from the art installation going toward non-governmental organizations that promote human-wildlife coexistence.

Before its renovation, the sizeable southwest portion of the park was under-utilized and virtually ignored by the public, despite including a natural point of entry, according to the conservancy.
