Dans les airs, l’aigle royal règne en maître. Il incarne la précision absolue. Dans les abysses, le calamar géant joue une autre partition. Une mise en abîme face aux prédateurs. Les deux développent une acuité pour résoudre des problématiques quotidiennes.
Mais qui des deux voit le mieux ?

La réponse est moins évidente qu’elle n’en a l’air. Car tout dépend de ce que l’on appelle « voir ». : distinguer un détail en plein jour ou percevoir l’invisible dans les profondeurs. Un duel fascinant entre plume et tentacule, où le vrai champion pourrait bien être... l’adaptation.

Painting like the nineteenth-century ‘globe-trotteress’ Constance Gordon-Cumming.

In 2025, Te Papa acquired four watercolours by the nineteenth-century British artist Constance Frederica Gordon-Cumming (1837–1924).

Over the summer, art history lecturer Dr Victoria Munn and student and artist, Catherine Shone, brought new light to bear on Gordon-Cumming’s artistic practice and process.

This plastic money box was made by the Bank of New Zealand after New Zealand trading banks gained governmental approval in October 1964 to each have their own private savings banks. This particular money box was made after decimal currency was introduced in July 1967.
Money boxes like this example were given to customers, often children, to encourage saving. The shape of this one evokes a bag full of coins.
