If the founding date is correct, then this would be Kyoto's oldest Tenmangū shrine. Although dating to 905, Dazaifu Tenmangū could be argued to have begun as a funerary shrine. Suika Tenmangū is possibly the oldest site dedicated to appeasing Michizane as the god Tenjin (天神).

She's in Tokyo, and her local tenmangu shrine (shrine to Tenjin--Michizane in god-mode) is having its uso-kae later this month. She'll take hers along and exchange it! (6/6)

More from the shrine in Dazaifu:

"The ceremony begins with participants gathering around a large wooden bullfinch in the courtyard. They then circle the bullfinch to rhythmic drumming, chanting "kaemasho kaemasho," passing the small carvings from person to person. The process is repeated a number of times.

After the ceremony ends, you can take one of the wooden birds back home with you for happiness and good fortune in the year ahead." (4/x)

DEC 29 2023: went to the Fukuoka City Botanical Garden but it was closed. From there we walked down a hill through a residential area, then found we had no idea where we were. Eventually we made our way to a train station (probably Nishitetsu Hirao Station) and caught the train back to the Nishitetsu Fukuoka (#Tenjin) station. #福岡市植物園 #天神

PS: big entry tomorrow!

DEC 16 2023: Morning: breakfast at a little ma-and-pa cafe called Coffee Fujita about halfway between Yakuin and Watanabe-Dori stations. #珈琲ふじた

Evening: window shopping in the busy retail area just west of #Tenjin station. #渡辺通駅 #薬院駅 #天神駅

NOV 2 2023: We made it to #Fukuoka the next day. First stop: the big underground mall at #Tenjin Station, where we had lunch. We made sure to memorize the station exit that would point us to our apartment: 12C. The mnemonic? 12 days of Christmas #福岡 #日本 #天神駅

The last full day in #Fukuoka #福岡! Tiny as it is, I will miss this little apartment. It was **home** for ten weeks, not just a hotel. Meals were cooked here, modifications were made (using cardboard boxes to create shelves), and the view of the big bus ramp and train line leading to #Tenjin #天神 Station was entertaining.

I know it's probably a major social faux pas to say anything nice about #DonQuijote, but I'm glad my first experience* was the one in #Fukuoka / #Tenjin. Except for the one in #Kagoshima, the others have been kinda disappointing in comparison. #DonKi #ドンキ

*Technically my first one was the one in #Hakodate, but I was only in that one briefly.
