🤖 Ah yes, yet another tale of #Kubernetes #chaos 🌩️, where Microsoft's #GitHub goes kaput during Black Friday mayhem, leaving engineers to ponder why they couldn't simply install a mirror 🪞 with a flick of their magic wands. Clearly, solving tech problems is as easy as requesting a unicorn on a budget 🦄💸.

Getting Forked by Microsoft

Three years ago, I was part of a team responsible for developing and maintaining Kubernetes clusters for end user customers. A main source for downtime in customer environments occurred when image registries went down. The traditional way to solve this problem is to set up a stateful mirror, however we had to work within customer budget and time constraints which did not allow it. During a Black Friday, we started getting hit with a ton of traffic while GitHub container registries were down. This limited our ability to scale up the cluster as we depended on critical images from that registry. After this incident, I started thinking about a better way to avoid these scalability issues. A solution that did not need a stateful component and required minimal operational oversight. This is where the idea for Spegel came from.

Canon had a good app for Android called Camera Connect - to download images to the computer and connect to the camera. However, it was full of bugs, errors, slowness, imperfections, and insane battery consumption.

Today the app was updated, and I had a naive thought: "Updated, fixed, improved!" Sure. Now they have, in addition to everything that already didn't work, added mandatory login via CanonID. And registration is not possible - the page, probably written by the same clumsy development team, consistently goes to a 403 error.

I hate corporations.

@henry The image displays a mobile application interface with a white background. At the top, there is a black status bar showing the time as 18:11, along with icons for VPN, signal strength, Wi-Fi, and battery level at 85%. The main content features an illustration of a person in a blue shirt and dark pants holding a camera to their eye, with a camera icon to the left and a smartphone icon to the right. The person is surrounded by abstract digital elements like squares and circles in blue and green. Below the illustration, the text reads "Connect to the camera" in bold, followed by a description: "This app connects your camera with your smartphone, and connects you with Canon." At the bottom, there are two buttons: an orange button labeled "Sign in with Canon ID" and a white button labeled "Create a Canon ID account." The interface suggests a connection between a Canon camera and a smartphone through the Canon app.

The image shows a mobile device screen displaying a 403 error message from a website. The top of the screen includes the time "18:11," a VPN icon, a battery icon showing 85%, and a Wi-Fi icon. The URL "myid.canon" is visible, indicating the website being accessed. The error message is prominently displayed in bold text, stating "403 ERROR" and "The request could not be satisfied." It explains that the request was blocked and the server could not connect, possibly due to too much traffic or a configuration error. The message advises trying again later or contacting the app or website owner. It also mentions that if the content is provided through CloudFront, troubleshooting steps can be found in the CloudFront documentation. The bottom of the screen shows a request ID: "UWAbj29H-nskbeSQDeu848RRrvdx-thgeiql_IMH78fpsqba--."

@henry It's really strange Henry, how different photographers have widely varying experiences with this Canon Connect app - I have no trouble with it at all, it connects to either my R3 or R5 quicker and easier than it used to, rarely loses connection and is a great remote control for self - filming. A few of my photographer buddies don't like it, some do. I don't think there will ever be a perfect app that we are all happy with.
@Dolphinchaz It's o-o-o-o-kay for downloading photos (actually could be better, but o-o-o-o-kay), but when it comes to remote management for the camera (recording the video, taking pictures live), it's beyond the "horrible" category
@henry happened to me right now, I wanted to shoot my next YouTube video, now I am looking at a camera that is unsuitable for filming yourself because of this. Imagine: you want to auto focus on yourself, but you're the only person in the room, you can't stand up and leave the frame because you lose the object you want to focus on. Why can't we have just working things?
