Cycling back from the far side of town just now, a driver courteously stayed back and was patient when I led through signalised junctions, edged out to stay clear of the illegally parked cars whose occupants were doubtless “just popping into this shop”, and stayed in non-crushed-into-the-kerb position past a pedestrian refuge. When they then passed wide and safe I waved thankyou and thought “that was great, I wish all drivers we so considerate”.
Then I caught myself. It isn’t being super considerate, it is the absolute basic minimum level of competence and responsibility. I still really meant the thanks as so many drivers fall so far short, and it should be encouraged, and it helps humanise myself and other people on bikes so drivers are less likely to try to kill us/ more likely to try not to kill us in future, but still.
