It's amazing how often a kid who shows little interest in positive engagement (or anything else) in class and radiates annoyance (or hostility) responds to that same teacher like they're Santa Claus or a long-lost family member a few months (or years) later in the hall or in someone else's classroom.

I don't want to read too much into the warm fuzzies (any more than I do the seething resentment), but staying respectful and encouraging and positive sometimes matters far more than we see in the moment. I know it's exhausting, but I swear - you're sometimes giving them more than you realize.
