The impending acquisition of Amsterdam University Press by the Taylor &… | Mark Huskisson

The impending acquisition of Amsterdam University Press by the Taylor & Francis Group reminds us that almost everything within the commodified publishing industry can be acquired. For context, AUP was privatised six years ago (see Guy Geltner's insight – https://lnkd.in/efbWXJXM), which has allowed for easier capture, but it is a stark reminder that the commercial imperative that drives the scholarly publishing industry has an insatiable, predatory appetite for growth.

This post by @MsPhelps shows which publishers are taking their responsibility to open their abstracts and which aren't.

Look at 5 largest publishers:

#Wiley and #MDPI have opened their abstracts. Great!

#SpringerNature has opened abstracts only for OA content. This isn't enough, as pointed out by their own flagship journal https://doi.org/10.1038/d41586-022-02915-1.

#Elsevier and #TandF look pathetic. They still haven't started to open their abstracts!

I4OA Hall of Fame - 2023 edition - Crossref

The Initiative for Open Abstracts (I4OA) was launched in September 2020 to advocate and promote the unrestricted availability of the abstracts of the world’s scholarly publications, particularly journal articles and book chapters, in trusted repositories where they are open and machine-accessible. I4OA calls on all scholarly publishers to open the abstracts of their published works and, where possible, to submit them to Crossref.
